George Wooden

Support Specialist, Special Populations Support Program, Indianapolis Urban League

George Wooden has been actively involved in Health and human services for many years, most recently in the field of Mental Health and Addictions as well as HIV Prevention & education for over 20 years. He began this part of his journey in this field as an Outreach Worker and soon migrated to HIV Testing Counseling and Sexual Health Education.

George continues to advocate and be a champion for the rights of those who were dually diagnosed with HIV & Mental Illness. George is adamant about serving this population because he has encountered from the very beginnings of the AIDS Epidemic those who early on suffered, struggled and died. Some of those very close to him as he suffered with addiction himself. Knowing the struggles are real since he started learning about his addiction over 27 years ago. George recently celebrated 20 uninterrupted years clean.

George continues to attend numerous trainings to further his education in Addiction/Recovery and Mental Health. George has been recognized locally and nationally for his work in the field.

George works tirelessly to support and give back what has freely been given to him. On the job and in 12 Step service work at jails, prisons and recovery facilities, he never fails to let those who need to know about the miracle of recovery in on what has helped to save his life and that of countless others who want help.

Every Monday night faithfully, he can be found at the best Home group in the area Thanks for the Miracle, serving in whatever capacity he is needed.
