The growth of digital technology has had both positive and negative impacts on mental health and psychiatric care. Dr. Hummer will review the latest information about how digital media use affects mental health and brain development in children and adolescents, including a focus on the potential long-term impacts of pandemic-related changes in technology lifestyles. Dr. Hummer will also explore how new technologies, such as virtual reality, digital games, and smartphone apps, are being used in innovative ways to address mental illness. This work includes a look at his lab’s current research assessing whether virtual reality can improve perspective taking in youth with disruptive behavior disorders.
